Dance Wanaka officially opened its new studio on Thursday (5 Dec), and marked the occasion with Royal NZ Ballet celebrities in town.

The large studio on Cliff Wilson Street with mountain views has been renovated to include a sprung floor, mirrors, custom made barres and viewing room for parents.  The studio has been officially named the Aspiring Studio.

"Dance Wanaka Director, Anna Thomas, says “the studio was a large investment and most importantly secures a home for the dance school in Wanaka now.

“I hope that Wanaka dancers will continue to enjoy the space for many decades & benefit from this inspiring new dance space”.

RNZB Ballet Master Martin Vedel and senior dancers Antonia Hewitt & Brendan Bradshaw visited the studio & met dancers who performed two dancers for them and a small congregation.

The Ballet Company was in Wanaka this week for is nationwide tour of Tutus on Tour, which marks the 60th anniversary of the RNZB.

With over 200 students taking classes in Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, Contemporary & a popular preschool programme, the school requires a facility for classes six days a week. This new premise allows the dance school to expand and is conveniently located near schools.

The sprung floor (only one known in Wanaka) was chosen to enhance performance and greatly reduce injuries. The floor is supported by rubber pads and woven wooden battens.  These floors are the most recommended and best available for dance and indoor sporting activities, as absorb body shock, giving it a softer feel when landing leaps and travelling movements.
