A Christmas Carol - Our Story

It’s Christmas Eve and everyone is celebrating in the streets.

Scrooge is rich and the meanest man alive. He doesn’t care about anyone and loathes Christmas day.  In his office, his clerk Bob Cratchit works long hours in icy cold conditions. His cheerful nephew, Fred, arrives to wish him a Merry Christmas and to invite his uncle to a Christmas dinner. Scrooge responds with a grumpy 'Bah!' followed by 'Humbug!'.

That evening when Scrooge is ready for bed, he is haunted by bells. His old business partner, Jacob Marley, soon appears as a ghost frightening him.  Marley entwines a chain around Scrooge, which represents the burden of regret and weight of the bad choices he’s made. He tells Scrooge that he will be haunted by three spirits during the night – the Ghosts of the Past, Present, and Future.

As the clock chimes 1am, the Ghost of the Past wakes him up. The ghost shows Scrooge scenes from his childhood at school and fun memories at a disco. He sees shadows from his past and the sadness of a lost love.

As 2am chimes, the Ghost of the Present appears.  Scrooge sees Christmas joy everywhere, and traditions of the people around him. He sees Fred celebrate Christmas with friends who joke about him and how others celebrate Christmas together.  Scrooge sees Bob Cratchit's home, where he is saddened by the sick, Tiny Tim, where there is no money for presents.

The final ghost appears as a phantom from the future.  He terrifies Scrooge with deathly visions and whispers from heaven.  Scrooge sobs with sadness and guilt, and wanders if his bad actions will ever be redeemable.
Finally, Scrooge wakes on Christmas Day full of kindness and happiness. He has learned his lesson from the overnight spirits. He shares gifts with everyone and is never mean again.
